Chief bridesmaid

My sister has just started blogging at her Costume Design website and has promised some posts on the process of making her own bridesmaid dress.

She has proclaimed herself “chief bridesmaid” and declared me a “bridezilla”. I pointed out that with such a title comes a number of responsibilities. Haha

My sister plans to make a dress following this Simplicity pattern, it will have a plain top and a patterned skirt using the fabric that we picked out together with the mother of the bride.

My choice of colour scheme did make it a challenge to find a nice fabric, especially because my ideal fabric designer, Jessica Jones, doesn’t do anything in a green-pink colour way. However, we happened upon this fabric in a local Fabric Guild sale. The perfect combination of vintage but modern with a simple/Scandinavian style.

If you’re interested in this fabric, it’s part of a range called Savannah and you can buy it online from Ghee’s.

Glam Rock hair

Last Saturday I went to Hit Her With Glitter – Dolly Rockit Rollers vs Sheffield Steel Rollers. I wanted to do my hair and make up to fit in with the Glam Rock theme and this is the awesome tutorial that inspired my hair.

I didn’t have the special waving tool that she has, so I just used hair crimpers. This prompted someone to say “Is that your real hair?!” Hahaha. Here’s a sneak peek of my look for the day.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star

I haven’t talked much about roller derby yet on the blog, mainly because I’ve been going through a tough time of late, but this week has been a good one so here goes…

Last August saw a big change for me when it came to skating, I injured a ligament in my knee which has taken not too long to heal physically, but a long time to heal mentally. I am only just getting back to skating again.

While I was injured and unable to skate I started to feel league duties weigh heavily on me. The work that I was putting in to roller derby did not equal the enjoyment I was getting out. Of course this wasn’t necessarily down to how the league, or members of it treated me, I just had a lot of responsibility on my shoulders and it felt like all work and no fun, which led to burn out.

This burn out culminated in my resignation from my position as league director. Obviously, not an easy thing to do. At the time I wasn’t sure whether I would be continuing on at all, that’s how burned out I felt, but I did try my hardest to make it easy for the remaining directors, SlamAbama and Nitro Noush. I just concentrated on handing everything over to them by the end of the month, and made it clear that even if I did not carry on with the league I had absolutely no intentions of joining or starting another league.

So, that’s what I did over January (including announcing it to the league at the AGM), and now I am focusing my attention on being a rollergirl again. I still have some responsibilities, but the biggest challenge is getting back into skating after my injury; attending practices but not being considered part of the travel team anymore, having significantly lower fitness levels, and even lacking in tactics knowledge (something I had always been top for before!).

But the reason for this blog post was something that happened last Sunday; Slam and Noush presented me with this necklace to say thank you for all of my work over the past two years. They did it after a Sunday practice, my first full practice in a long time, and I felt this was a huge sign that I over the worst.

Now I can look back and feel proud of the things that I have helped to acheive for the league; fairer policies, improved bout team selection, and the transformation of many of our sub-committees into hard working, slick machines. Looking forward I don’t plan to bout anytime soon, I’ll just be taking it easy but it looks like there is light at the end of this derby tunnel!

How to save your iPhone battery life

Last month Andy and I went to Berlin for a long weekend and to prevent data roaming charges we switched off 3G and Cellular Data (Settings > General > Network). What I wasn’t expecting was how much that would improve the battery life of my phone! I usually have to charge my phone every day, but by switching off 3G I’m back to a far more reasonable 2-3 days.

You might expect that switching off 3G would prevent you from doing all your usual fun stuff on the go but if you’re like me, you have wifi at home and at work, you don’t need my 3G on in either of those places. You don’t need 3G on while you’re at roller derby practice/swimming/the gym. You don’t need it on while you’re shopping in Asda.

The only time when I regularly use 3G is on the bus on the way home from work (in the mornings I just listen to music), at this time I can switch it on and use it to check my facebook and twitter for those 10 minutes and switch it off again when I get home.

Other times when I might need my 3G are in the car, when we’re lost and need directions. Again, I switch it on and I’m safe in the knowledge that I have plenty of battery to get me to the place where we’re supposed to be and I haven’t been using it all up with push notifications.

The only down side to this I’ve found is that I have to switch Cellular Data back on to listen to my voicemails, but that’s fair, I think!

One more thing

This was a tip I already knew but whenever you close an app on your iPhone by pressing the Home button you are actually just minimising it. You can save a lot of battery life by properly closing apps.

Double press the Home button, this will bring up a row of apps at the bottom of your screen, these are all the apps you have open – there’s even more if you flick left and right. If this is the first time you have done this then all of your apps will be here.

Hold down one of the app icons until it starts to shake (like you do when moving icons around on the home screen). You can now close the apps that you don’t need open. For example, if you flick right to the end you’ll probably see that game you’ve only played once, or your period tracker that you only need once per month. Close them, and bask in your hugely improved battery life.

Floral favours

I love these favours that were featured today on Rock n Roll Bride. Of course anything pink and green gets my attention :)

I’m planning to do something similar where I combine the floral decorations with the favours; we’ll have several little jars and vases with flowers inside will make up the center pieces and then guests can take home a jar at the end of the day as their favours.

Wise words

Nobody’s perfect, but overall I’d say that I’ve been really good about giving praise where it’s due, admitting when I’m wrong, and making sure people know how much I love and appreciate the time we spend together in roller derby.

Bonnie De Stroir – My Top 2 Boos and Yays

Excellent advice for anyone who runs a volunteer led organisation. Give praise, lots of it; admit when you are wrong; make sure people know how much you love the time you spend together.
